Amon Carter Museum
The Antiques Roadshow on PBS rolled through Dallas last summer and they discovered a rare gem of a painting. An anonymous Dallas owner had brought in The Illustrious Guest (1847) by James Henry Beard (1811-1893).
For those of you who are Roadshow regulars, you know the illustrious guest is none other than legendary Kentucky statesman Henry Clay (1777-1852). The painting was estimated by Alan Fausel, Bonhams, to be between $300 to $500 thousand.
The Illustrious Guest in now on view at the Amon Carter Museum. The painting is currently on long-term load to the museum. It is located in the upstairs painting and sculpture galleries.
