The Torment of Saint Anthony (1487-88) by Michelangelo was recently acquired by the Kimbell Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas. The Torment is an oil and tempera on wooden panel and is presumed to be the earliest work by Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564). It is the first Michelangelo to enter an American collection and one of only four know easel paintings. The painting measures 18.5 x 13.25 inches.
Michelangelo is believe to have painted The Torment when he was 12 or 13 years old. The painting will go on view this fall at the Kimbell Art Museum.
