The mark of a painter – their touch, gesture or stroke – leaves visible signs of creation on a surface. A series of these marks builds up into an image, whether abstract or representational. Artist Wassily Kandinsky poetically stated, “The artist is the hand that, by touching this or that key, sets the soul vibrating automatically.” Strokes visually explores the idea of what a stroke may mean today in the contemporary world of art that encompasses new forms of painting and picture-making, whether it be created with paint, photography, video or even sewing with thread.
