piece together
Lesli Robertson

The work exhibited in piece together is an evaluation of my work as an artist over the past few years. I have been so strongly involved in researching handicrafts and creating artwork based on my work in Uganda, Africa, that it became time to step back and consider what it is about this culture and their arts that has resonated so strongly with me. What I found is that the idea of process is central to my work and theirs. Through this body I work, I have explored the idea of process as being more than the steps needed to make one object and then the process ends, but how that object informs the creation of a new work, a new idea, or a new direction.

Aqsa Shakil

The work in this show includes travel drawings or ‘Trekoids’ that have come together through 3 years and 10 journeys from Dallas to New York, Lahore, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Karachi, Indonesia, Canada, New York, Disney Land California, and back. These drawings depict the vibrations of vehicles, time, pictures, objects, songs, and random memories. “It’s cold in here; my knees are freezing. Haven’t been able to get any sleep at all on the plane. Didn’t sleep much last night either – packing, and I still forgot to keep my portfolio and Afshi’s photographs. We have such a strangely wonderful relationship. I want to go to Nano’s Awan Sharif with her, so we can cry our eyes out over stories of cute little 80-or-so-year old Nano walking around in the middle of the night and Afshi trapping me into giving her a massage. A time to scream, a time for silence, a time for faith. There’s a time for us to shine.” Page No. 3, Trekoids: Dallas – Dubai – Lahore – Indonesia – Dallas 2009

Upstairs Gallery: 500X Member’s Show

The exhibition features work by all 500X members, many of them new to the gallery. Works in a variety of media – painting, drawing, photography, and sculpture – will be on view and offer a preview of the upcoming season of more focused member exhibitions.

2009-2010 members are Tim Best, Rebecca Carter, Matt Clark, Mark Collop, Shelby Cunningham, Thomas Feulmer, Scott Hilton, Clayton Hurt, Sean Adam Ibanez, Joel Kiser, Natalie Macellaio, Lesli Robertson, Aqsa Shakil, Sarah Williams, and Tiffany Wolf. Members of 500X are emerging artists from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The exhibitions at the gallery offer viewers a unique look of the art scene of the Metroplex.

Clayton Hurt

This work is a collection of small objects that have been separated from studio trash, manipulated in ways many times until they finally arrive as finished works of art. This project room show has given Alvaro and me the opportunity to exhibit our scrap objects similar to how we did in graduate school. Things that do not work out are not always bad; they lend themselves to new areas of exploration and levels of existence.
