You should know by now the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, is getting the first Michelangelo painting to enter an American collection. The Kimbell acquired The Torment of Saint Anthony (1487-88, oil and tempera on a wooden panel) by Michelangelo in May of this year. The Torment of Saint Anthony will go on display this Saturday, September 26, 2009.
In case you haven’t seen any of the news, review, blogs and tweets, having a Michelangelo painting in Fort Worth is a really big deal. Think about it, The Torment of Saint Anthony is over 500 years old. Texas wasn’t even on the map until 1519. And not only does The Torment of Saint Anthony have history, the painting also has a name brand, Michelangelo.
Michelangelo de Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475 – 1564) was an Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet and engineer. He is the other Renaissance man, right next to Leonardo da Vinci.
