Special Art Talk with Sandow Birk
McKinney Avenue Contemporary
Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at 6:30 p.m.
Sandow Birk, a guest artist from Los Angeles, is flying here to Dallas and giving an ART TALK at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary (The MAC) about his work and his notable suite of fifteen, large-scale woodcut prints on sekishu paper (each measuring 48 x 96 inches!).
The Depravities of War series inspired by the series of etchings by Jacques Callot’s The Miseries of War in the 17th century, which in turn were the inspiration for Goya’s The Disasters of War in the 19th century.
The works were published by HuiPress in Hawaii in 2007, and printed in collaboration with Master Printer Paul Mullowney, assisted by HuiPress printers Casey Neumann and Nichol Markowitz and Rhode Island School of Design intern Samuel Carr-Prindle.
The images follow the course of the Iraq war, from invasion through controversy and investigation.
Since the artist was not able to attend the opening reception, this is your chance to meet and talk to him (and sign your copy of the exhibition catalog!). We hope you will come!
