The Fairmont Dallas proudly announced today the establishment of an Artist-in-Residence program. The program, a mutually beneficial partnership between the hotel and Ross Akard Gallery owner Bryan Embry, will feature breakthrough local and regional artists as recommended by Embry. This concept is the only known program of its kind in the area and a natural fit for The Fairmont Dallas, the only hotel in the Dallas Arts District.
Embry and an art selection committee from the hotel will choose an artist to work on property for three months. The onsite studio is located on the “O” level in the South Tower of The Fairmont Dallas, one level below Ross Akard Gallery and directly accessible via the downtown Dallas underground tunnels. “Oftentimes artists work in seclusion, creating pieces that are available to the public only after completion, but the studio’s location, out in the open, provides a first-hand look at the creative process from start to finish,” said Embry.
The artist will spend a significant amount of time each week in the studio creating new art and interacting with hotel guests and visitors. Artwork created throughout the length of the artist’s stay will serve various purposes – some will be displayed in public areas of the hotel, others will illuminate the hotel’s themed Arts District Suite and a number of select pieces will benefit various philanthropic efforts. The Ross Akard Gallery will also feature pieces available for purchase.
“Having this program on property is a testament to our commitment to the arts,” said Shannah Milstead, Director of Sales and Marketing for The Fairmont Dallas. “Coupled with the successful Ross Akard Gallery and many years of arts and culture sponsorship, it solidifies our position as the Arts District Hotel.”
Contemporary artist Zach Saucedo has been named as the hotel’s inaugural artist in residence. Saucedo was previously featured as a solo artist at Ross Akard Gallery, chosen by Embry for his ability to create striking imagery that challenges the human psyche. “Zach is continually looking for ways to push the limits of his art,” said Embry. “He is the perfect candidate for this program because his art is very approachable and his artistic statement is something that everyone can relate to – peace, love and leaving the world a better place than when you found it.”
Saucedo is a self-taught artist who draws inspiration from his mother, also an artist. From an early age he was intrigued by the ability to use his hands as tools, not just as a hobby, but as a way to make a living. He experiments with various mediums, such as oils, acrylics and pen and ink, and always stays close the theme of love and its many manifestations in life.
“Art is my ministry, my message,” said Saucedo. “No matter what you believe in, art helps people remember to be kind to each other.”
In the first month, Saucedo will focus on two subjects – “Gangsta Jesus,” a high-resolution, pixilated portrait of Jesus, which represents Saucedo’s relationship with Jesus as a boy growing up in the barrios of West Phoenix, and the three-branch, three-root trees that have become his signature pieces. He will create 15 of each, for a total of 30 pieces in the first 30 days.
Saucedo will serve as the artist in residence through the end of September 2010, and will be available in the art studio at various times throughout the week. Zach Saucedo is a conceptual artist based in Dallas and Phoenix and has been painting and creating since his childhood. His artistic tendencies come from two sources: his mother and God. He was raised to acknowledge God in all things, which in turn give him the motivation to create and inspire in everything he does. Growing up in a home with a mother who was an artist gave Saucedo the skills and training to do what he does today. While he does not have formal art training, his artwork is fueled by a curiosity to explore anything that allows him to use tools and his hands to make a living. Saucedo also utilizes early work experiences as a high-voltage electrician and in lighting and interior design in his work. He is involved in the Dallas art community as on of the founders of the Dallas Independent Artists Community and is proudly involved in the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center (DCAC). Saucedo’s most recent shows include “I am Here” at Southside on Lamar, “Anticipation,” a solo show during First Friday Gallery Walk in Phoenix, he had pieces at an Art + Advocacy event for the DCAC held at 333 in Dallas and “Revolutionary but Gangster” at Ross Akard Gallery.
My visions as an artist change often and my evolution is a speedy one. I truly believe that none of my work is purely my own and that it is all just an interpretation of a greater message. I invite you to view it alongside of me as it happens, and in turn I am just as eager to learn and be inspired by as many of your lives as possible.
