N.R.G. with Mark Nelson, Richard Ross and Sergio Garcia
Opening reception September 18, 2010
N.R.G. is a coming together of three of the most closely watched artists in the Dallas counter-cultural scene: Sergio Garcia, Mark Nelson and Richard Ross. On their own, each has established a reputation and a following. N.R.G. is an opportunity to assess the work of these three diverse innovators in one place. This is not their first collaborative venture; in 2008, the three showed together to acclaim.

Sergio Garcia’s candy colored tricycles toy with the viewer’s structural expectations,
stimulating childhood curiosity and recollections, while his ironic and self-reflective text
paintings promote an open dialogue about society’s subjective views of morality. Mark
Nelson’s scenes of architectural spaces are an exploration into temporality and the
landscape of the mind, a snapshot of the psyche that challenges the viewer to engage in the story-telling process. Through his vibrant multi lino-cut collages, Richard Ross
reveals searches for beauty in the mundane and new iconic figures, while referencing
both historic and contemporary mythology. His childlike characters and landscape
stylishly coax raw emotions and feelings from the viewer.
What links these fiercely independent artists, who work in diverse media and yet seem to share a common bond? The impulse to challenge convention, interrogate assumptions, and recast familiar tropes into new and provocative forms. In short, energy through N.R.G.
