United Commercial Realty Supports Local High School Students Through Third Annual Retail As Art Photography Invitational

United Commercial Realty (UCR), a national leader in retail real estate services, property representation, asset and property management and investment sales, has partnered with Dallas Independent School District (DISD) high school students for the third annual “Retail as Art” photography invitational.

“Retail as Art” is a photography contest designed to showcase the best local photographic talent that captures the true essence of Dallas retail. Participating students are asked to present their photographic interpretations of “Retail as Art” through photographs of Dallas retail including: store signage, lighting, merchandise, shoppers, retail employees, and more. The top three winning entrants will receive a scholarship worth $1,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place and $750 for third place. Additionally, each participating school will receive a gift appropriate to its art department from UCR.

“UCR is committed to education and giving back to our local communities. We value personal expression through visual elements and the ’Retail as Art’ program is the perfect opportunity to merge the two. UCR’s experience in retail real estate and my background as a teacher gives students an opportunity to celebrate and recognize their talents in the arts,” said Mickey Ashmore, president and CEO of UCR.

In 2008, UCR held the first “Retail as Art” invitational with students from the Booker T.
Washington School for the Visual and Performing Arts. In 2009, UCR extended the invitational to include students from Emmett J. Conrad High School and Booker T. Washington. For 2010, UCR is inviting all DISD high schools to participate and looks forward to seeing the incredible photography submitted from around the community. The results from the previous two “Retail as Art” competitions were outstanding, not only from the quality of photography submitted, but from the benefits received by the participants and their schools.

Local photographers, tastemakers and industry members will judge submitted artwork. Past judges include: real estate reporter Bill Hethcock of the Dallas Business Journal, Allison V. Smith, noted Dallas photographer, E. David Goltl, studio proprietor of Design Within Reach, Kevin Kracmer, co-founder of HCK2, and Mickey Ashmore. After the judging process concludes, the winners will be announced during an event on May 12, 2011 at Three Three Three First Avenue where the winning photos will be displayed, as well as other notable submissions to the invitational. After the exhibit, the artwork will be displayed for sale at Design Within Reach located at 4524 McKinney Avenue. All proceeds from the sale of the students’ artwork will be placed in a “Retail as Art” fund for future invitationals and support for arts education.

One-hundred-percent of all proceeds from the sale of students’ photography go towards the UCR “Retail As Art” Fund, which is organized and operated exclusively for educational and charitable purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended, or to any corresponding provision of any future federal tax law.
