About Chalk the Block
Chalk-the-Block is a public art festival hosted by The City of El Paso’s Museums and Cultural Affairs Department (MCAD) in partnership with the El Paso Community Foundation. The public art festival is home to over 90 artists and 25,000 event goers since 2008. The event features artists using the traditional Italian chalk technique called madonnari. Chalk artists compete in three separate categories where they use the chalk technique to layout their drawings on event sidewalks. The event also contracts national artists to exhibit large scale art installations and performances throughout the event footprint. The event hosts fun events for people of all ages, including acrobats/aerialist performers, large interactive puppets, fire breathers, a kids interactive chalk area, face painting, art vendors, and great food! The Texas Downtown Association (TDA) Presidents Award Program awarded Chalk-the-Block the 2010 “Best Promotional Event” award. The goal is to improve the quality of life in El Paso and engage artists with each other and the public. The fourth annual event will take place October 14th through October 16th of 2011. Admission is free.
