Final Week of 9×9: Expect the Unexpected at the Dallas Museum of Art

This week is the final week of our 9×9: Expect the Unexpected. The Dallas Museum of Art will stay open until 9:00 p.m. Thursday, July 28; Friday, July 29; and Saturday, July 30 with activities, games, music, dining, and more. The Roger Boykin Group will perform on Thursday night during Jazz in the Atrium beginning at 6:00 p.m. and Margaret Meehan will lead C3 Artistic Encounter at 6:30 p.m. Filmmaker Jonathan Tomhave will introduce this week’s Pictureshow film Little Big Man at 7:00 p.m.

Visitors can race through the Museum during the DMAzing Race at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 29 and learn photography tips from photographer Ted Forbes during the 7:00 p.m. Photowalking. Saturday, July 30 kids can test their creativity against grown-ups during Art You Smarter Than Your Grown-up? at 5:00 and 6:30 p.m. Grab a cocktail and your lucky charm for Art Bingo from 5:30 until 7:00 p.m.

Tuesday, August 2 is Beat the Heat First Tuesday. General admission is free and Art of the American Indian: The Thaw Collection is half-price ($8) from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Kids can join in a scavenger hunt, sketch in the galleries, meet Arturo, and watch a performance by Le Theatre de Marionette.

Roger Boykin, nationally recognized multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, and soloist, performs with his group. Boykin, a legend on the Dallas jazz scene, has toured with such superstars as Leon Spencer, David “Fathead” Newman, and Isaac Hayes.

Pictureshow: Summer Film Series

Join us for six evenings celebrating the art of cinema, inspired by the special exhibitions and collections of the Dallas Museum of Art. Curators, authors, artists, and special guests will discuss the films before each screening.

Little Big Man (1969)
July 28, 2011; 7:00 p.m.

This award-winning film, directed by Arthur Penn and starring Dustin Hoffman, Faye Dunaway, and Richard Mulligan, tells the fantastic life story of Jack Crabb and his experiences as a gunslinger, associate of Wild Bill Hickok, and scout for General George Armstrong Custer. Adopted by the Cheyenne Indians and reared in their culture, Crabb has a unique perspective on both Caucasian and Native American life in the 19th century.

This film is rated PG-13 (139 minutes).

Filmmaker Jonathan Tomhave will introduce Little Big Man. Dr. Tomhave is Assistant Professor in the departments of Anthropology and Radio, Television and Film at the University of North Texas, where he teaches courses in (Mis)representation of North American Indians and Community-Based Participatory Filmmaking.
