The Fairmont Dallas welcomes Hobbes Vincent as the next Artist in Residence, continuing the hotel’s initiative to feature breakthrough local and regional artists. Vincent, a surrealist sculptor, works with a variety of mediums to create pieces ranging in size, including a 13-foot stag currently featured in the lobby of the hotel.

“As soon as we put Hobbes’ stag in the lobby, it began generating interest and inquiries from guests and visitors to the hotel,” said Nicole Considine, director of sales and marketing for The Fairmont Dallas. “The natural next step was to make him part of our Artist in Residence program.”

Vincent’s love of sculpture began early in his childhood. He recalls camouflaging pieces of clay as block erasers so he could sculpt during his classes in elementary school. He perfected his craft through self-teaching, starting a piece without a full design and using his imagination to expand on the idea and complete his work. Vincent formally started his sculpting career in Dallas during an internship with Reel FX Creative Studios working with 3D modeling animation. Following his internship, he served as chief sculptor at Brad Oldham Inc., in Dallas until he opened his own studio in 2009, Vincent Studio where he works today.

Vincent, in residence from July 1, 2011 through September 30, 2011, is looking forward to his new home in the “O” level studio space where he will create a series of sculptures to be displayed throughout his residency.

“I’ve always had my studio in my living space,” he said. “So I’m looking forward to having a separate little sanctuary where I can focus in and get more done.”

In the final month of his residency, Ross Akard Gallery, located in the lobby level of the hotel, will feature an exhibit of Vincent’s work with a closing ceremony at the end of his residency, where Vincent will unveil a piece that will become a part of the hotel’s permanent collection.

About the Artist-in-Residence Program

The Fairmont Dallas’ Artist-in-Residence program is a collaborative initiative with Ross Akard Gallery and features local, regional and national artists who reside in the hotel for three months at a time while working in an onsite studio located on the “O” level in the hotel’s south tower. Artwork created throughout the length of the artist’s stay serves various purposes – some is displayed in public areas of the hotel, others illuminate the hotel’s themed Art Suite and a number of select pieces benefit various philanthropic efforts.
