Grab a mat, round up the kids and get your OHM on with the Crow Collection of Asian Art and Yogiños: Yoga For Youth®, an OHMazing™ interdisciplinary program that uses art, music, games, stories and other sensory-integrated activities to promote physical and mental wellness. The collaborative combo today released a second-volume yoga-for-kids DVD titled Yogiños: Yoga For Youth®: Vishnu’s OHMazing™ Journeys. Filmed at the Crow Collection of Asian Art, Vishnu’s OHMazing™ Journeys weaves together ancient narratives of the hero Vishnu and the heroine Lakshmi through yoga, original art, music and dance.
The DVD will officially debut at Crow Collection After Dark: Vishnu’s OHMazing™ Journeys from 6 p.m. – midnight Friday, September 16. Celebrating the world premier, Crow Collection After Dark will roll out the red carpet for a full night of art activities, yoga classes including hip-hop yoga and Yogiños: Yoga For Youth®, an outdoor concert with MC Yogi on Flora Street, late-night karaoke, candlelight meditation and more. The event is free and open to the public.
Endorsed by Dr. Andrew Weil, the 90-minute DVD features dozens of poses the entire family can enjoy together including parent-child demos, free-style dance, quiet breathing exercises, group poses and more. Each pose is highlighted in English, Spanish and Sanskrit, the ancient language from which yoga terms are derived. There’s also an option to view the entire DVD in Spanish. Vishnu’s OHMazing™ Journeys is available for $15.95 at crowcollection.org.
“I’ve long advocated yoga as a means of maintaining flexibility and muscle tone as we enter our later years. But yoga is equally valuable for children, teaching them how to care for their growing bodies and develop strength, grace and flexibility,” said Andrew Weil, M.D. “Beth’s Reese’s programs are based on ancient poses that are particularly appropriate for today’s children, even those who may have physical limitations. Her work has my full endorsement.”
Vishnu’s OHMazing™ Journeys is a follow up to the award-winning Yogiños: Yoga For Youth®: The Story of Ganesha DVD, which was released in 2010. The Story of Ganesha features works of art from the Crow Collection of Asian Art as well as an Art Talk with Amy Hofland, director of the Crow Collection. In February 2011, Yogiños and the Crow Collection teamed up to offer Tuesday morning classes as part of the Crow Collection’s expanding wellness program. Due to popular demand, a second session will be added on Saturdays beginning October 4. (Yogiños classes are $10 per family and free for Friends of the Crow Collection Wellness Members.)
“Having a child with Sensory Integration Disorder, I’ve seen first-hand the remarkable effects of this program,” said Elizabeth Reese, Ph.D., founder and CEO of Yogiños: Yoga For Youth®. “Yogiños is different because it’s an all-encompassing curriculum that engages children through their senses, creating a memorable enriching experience on the mat, while teaching them to incorporate the practices and lessons they learn in their day-to-day lives. And, it’s really fun! I’ve talked with families whose kids want to watch the DVD at home or in the car just for entertainment.”
