Picturing Health: Norman Rockwell and the Art of Illustration

Today, the El Paso Museum of Art announced and exciting exhibition titled Picturing Health: Norman Rockwell and the Art of Illustration. The exhibit was organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA, and is made up of original paintings from the collection of Pfizer Inc. Picturing Health opens October 1 and runs through December 31, 2011.
The collection of works were originally created for advertising campaigns for three pharmaceutical companies and an optical company between 1929 and 1961. The works feature the doctor / patient relationship and portray physicians as revered figures in mid-twentieth century American culture.
Norman Rockwell’s paintings will be juxtaposed with original works by noted contemporary illustrators who have also explored health and well-being for major publications.
Picturing Health: Norman Rockwell and the Art of Illustration is sponsored by Paso Del Norte Health Foundation, The Catholic Foundation / Muldoon-Hendler Family Fund, United Bank of El Paso del Norte, Pfizer Inc., and Airport Printing.
Also exhibiting at the same time and organized the by Norman Rockwell Museum is Norman Rockwell: Behind the Camera. This exhibit includes more than one hundred digital prints, paintings, drawings, magazine tear sheets, photographic equipment and archival letters. Among the paintings on view will be Norman Rockwell’s The Tattoo Artist (1944), currently owned by the Brooklyn Museum.
These exhibits along with Andy Warhol: Celebrities and Icons make for a lot of must see art at the El Paso Museum of Art.
