Tyler Museum of Art Prepares for Wyeth Exhibition; Museum Closed from July 31 Through September 6

The Tyler Museum of Art will be closed to the public from July 31 through September 6, 2012. During this time, the Museum will be preparing for the upcoming and exciting exhibition The Wyeths Across Texas.

The Museum currently has two exhibitions on view. Dandies, Damsels, Witches and Weavers: Figuration in 19th Century American Art from the Graham Williford Collection will be on view through July 22 and Metonymic Transfiguration: The Apotheosis of the Body in Recent Works of Jack Barnett will be on view through July 29.

When the Museum reopens on September 7, The Wyeths Across Texas will be on view through December 9, 2012. This exhibition will be the first major show featuring works by N.C., Andrew and Jamie Wyeth to be presented in Texas in 25 years, when the Dallas Museum of Art hosted An American Vision: Three Generations of Wyeth Art, organized by the Brandywine Museum in Pennsylvania.

The Wyeths Across Texas is organized by the TMA and will include works drawn from public and private collections in Texas. This exhibition will bring to the public and a new generation a rare opportunity to experience works by America’s most famous family of artists in the 20th century.

When the exhibition opens, the Museum will offer private-led tours hosted by Victoria Wyeth through the exhibition. Ms. Wyeth is the great-grandchild of N.C., the only grandchild of Andrew and the niece of realist Jamie Wyeth, who currently resides and works in Monhegan, ME, and Chadds Ford, PA. With a unique perspective, Ms. Wyeth will offer guests a more personal side of the artists and their works. She will also give a public lecture on Wyeth art during the opening weekend.

An exhibition catalog to accompany The Wyeths Across Texas will be published by the TMA and will include an essay by art historian Henry Adams. Adams will also come to Tyler and give a public lecture on Wyeth art during the exhibition.

Other events related to this exhibition will be announced as the opening approaches, including Family Days, Seniors’ Day, lectures, children’s art activities and many more. For updated event information, visit tylermuseum.org.
