Noted national artist/educators Mary Walling Blackburn and Brittany Ransom have been appointed to faculty positions in the Division of Art at SMU Meadows School of the Arts, beginning in fall 2012.
By day, they’re construction managers, academic advisors, professors, IT managers, administrative assistants and librarians. But in their spare time, many University of North Texas faculty and staff members are artists. This August, their creative talents will be on display in the On My Own Time exhibition at UNT on the Square.

The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth announced the line-up for the Fall 2012 Tuesday Evenings Lecture Series. The 2012 season includes artists David Dawson, Nicholas Nixon, Rosson Crow, KAWS, Gary Simmons and others. These lectures are held in the Modern’s auditorium and begin at 7 p.m. The Tuesday Evenings series brings artists, scholars, and critics to discuss their work each week during the spring and fall. The fall series begins September 11 and ends December 4, 2012.
Lucian Freud: Portraits, now on display through October 28, 2012, at the Modern Museum of Fort Worth, is well worth a little of your own obsessive viewing. The Modern’s exhibit, a real coup for the museum and its chief curator, Michael Auping, houses a vast collection of about 90 portraits dating from 1943 through Freud’s death in 2011. On loan from the National Portrait Gallery, London, this luscious flesh parade of oils on canvas not only reflects Freud’s unique and celebrated obsession with the human form, but also his ability to capture the emotional undercurrent that flows between painter, subject and viewer.
December 2012 is the 10th anniversary of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth’s building designed by Tadao Ando. The Modern will mark the anniversary with a series of new acquisitions on view this fall, culminating in a celebration gala and dinner on December 6, 2012.
The El Paso Museum of Art seeks volunteers, from recent graduates to retirees, to become tour guides, also known as docents. Classes are free, and no previous knowledge of art is necessary. Docents have a desire to learn and share information about the arts and humanities, enjoy working with youth and adults, and can devote nine months to the training program between September 2012 and May 2013. Upon successful completion of the training program, docents must commit to giving tours for at least one year. Bilingual skills are encouraged but not required, and docents are non-paid volunteers.
