Blanton Museum of Art Announces 2013 Gala Celebrating Fifty Years

The Blanton Museum of Art at The University of Texas at Austin marks its 50th anniversary in 2013 and will celebrate this milestone occasion on Saturday, February 16, 2013 with a black-tie gala and special preview of Through the Eyes of Texas: Masterworks from Alumni Collections. The elegant event will launch an exciting year of programming to celebrate the golden anniversary, including a community-wide party in April.

Former University of Texas at Austin president Larry R. Faulkner and former Blanton director Jessie Otto Hite will serve as honorary chairs of the gala which will honor the Blanton’s history and the visionary donors and collectors whose gifts helped build the museum’s collection of over 17,000 works of art. “The Blanton’s golden anniversary,” says Blanton director Simone Wicha, “is a time to celebrate our rich legacy and to acknowledge the many visitors, members, and supporters who have made the museum a special place for art, scholarship, and discovery.”

Regional event chairs who have stepped forward to lead this event include Suzanne Deal Booth, Jeanne Klein and Mary Yancy of Austin, Nancy Gordon of Houston, Carol Lynn Looney of South Texas, Ellen Bivins of Amarillo, Virginia Lebermann of Marfa, and Patty Huffines of Dallas.

The Blanton’s 50th anniversary is an opportunity to showcase one of UT’s “gems” that touches the lives of students throughout the university and serves as a gateway connecting the public to the university’s many resources. In celebration, the Blanton has organized Through the Eyes of Texas, a special exhibition that will survey the art collections of University of Texas at Austin alumni from across the country with nearly 100 extraordinary works by artists ranging from Auguste Renoir to Georgia O’Keeffe to Andy Warhol.  The presentation will highlight the fascinating stories of the objects and their owners, and celebrate the arts leadership of those who have studied at UT.

The Blanton gala is a biennial event that raises essential support for the museum’s key programs. Funds raised provide critical funding for the Blanton’s wide range of outstanding exhibitions, extensive educational programming for students, adults, and children of all ages, and collection care, and will further the development of the arts and culture in Austin, at UT, and throughout the state.
