The Joule Hotel has commissioned a major public art installation as part of its sponsorship of the MTV RE:DEFINE benefit exhibition and auction in aid of the MTV Staying Alive Foundation.
Dallas is home to one of the world’s most iconic city skylines, and for the 2012 edition of MTV RE:DEFINE the brief for the public installation was to find an artist who could interpret some of the inexorable flux of architectural developments in and around the city.
The installation is being created by emerging British artist Lee Baker, who is working in collaboration with curator, The Future Tense and host venue, The Goss-Michael Foundation. Baker is rapidly generating a global reputation for his vivid paintings and installations.
In responding to the brief, Baker was immediately struck by the parallels that exist at the core of his art practice. The rise and fall of seemingly indomitable man-made cities is the inspiration for his current work, and the impending destruction and redevelopment of this imposing and historical structure provided the artist with valuable inspiration for his proposal.
The location for the mural is the pedestrian corridor linking Main Street and Elm Street. This major new mural will bring to life a temporary fascia lining the deconstruction of the old Praetorian Building (known locally as Stone Place Tower), immersing passers-by in Bakers’ highly contemporary color palettes and deliberately skewed perspectives.
Work on the mural began on September 10 and will be completed in time for the MTV RE:DEFINE gala exhibition and auction at The Goss-Michael Foundation on Saturday, September 22, where Baker also has a recent painting on show.
Measuring in excess of 100 feet, the mural is situated across the street from the flagship Neiman Marcus store, The Joule Hotel expansion project and within walking distance of the internationally acclaimed Dallas Arts District.
Hosted at The Goss-Michael Foundation and chaired by Jessica Olsson-Nowitzki and Anna-Sophia van Zweden, the MTV RE:DEFINE gala auction will take place on the evening of Saturday, September 22, with 30 art lots from some of the world’s leading contemporary artists, over 20 exclusive silent and special auction lots and a live auction by Simon de Pury, chairman of Phillips de Pury and Company. All money raised will go towards the Foundation’s work empowering young people engaged in fighting the stigma, spread and threat of the HIV and AIDS epidemic through inspiring grantee projects around the world.
