Watercolor artists Julya Thomson Kirkpatrick passes away of natural causes on Wednesday, September 5, 2012.

Kirpatrick was born February 4, 1917 in St. Louis, Missouri. Her parents were William Hargadine and Elizabeth (Johnson) Thomas. Kirkpatrick was a resident of Dallas from childhood until 2005, when she moved to Sugar Land.

Kirkpatrick received a B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1937. She earned a Masters in Art from Southern Methodist University (SMU). Kirkpatrick taught English and art for the Dallas Independent School District (DISD).

Kirkpatrick later became a watercolor artist. She specialized in painting historic Texas homes and buildings. Her work was used in the lectures she gave about the history and architecture of Texas. Kirkpatrick was a charter member of the Southwestern Watercolor Society.

Kirkpatrick was a member of the First Unitarian Church of Dallas.

Kirkpatrick was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Guy, and her daughter, Diana. She is survived by her son, Guy, four grandchildren, Christy, Cameron, Zephan, and Cyrus, and four great-grandchildren, Alec, Jared, Paige and Tess.

A private service will be held by Kirkpatrick’s family.
