Fort Worth Museum of Science and History to Honor U.S. Army Officer Archibald Butt

Members of any branch of the United States Military, with a valid military I.D., will receive free admission into the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, including Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, on Saturday, January 12 and Sunday, January 13, 2013, in honor of United States Army officer Archibald Butt, military aide-de-camp to both President Theodore Roosevelt and President William Howard Taft. After distinguished service with President Taft , Major Butt embarked upon a six-week tour of Europe in the spring of 1912, returning on the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic. Heroically, Butt went down with the ship.

On board Titanic, his experiences as a soldier and leader were put to good use on the night of April 14-15, 1912.  Eyewitness accounts from survivors describe Major Butt as naturally taking charge, calmly maintaining order, and graciously helping women and children onto the lifeboats. Major Butt perished in the sinking along with his friend Francis Millet. After their deaths, the Millet-Butt Memorial Fountain was built in their memory in Washington, D.C.

The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History and Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition would like to recognize and honor the courageous actions of the men and women of the United States Military by offering them free admission to the exhibition.  The bravery of Major Butt aboard the Titanic is a reminder of what an inspiration our country’s military heroes are to us on a daily basis.
