It was a sad day for all of us in Dallas on Friday, October 19, 2012, when Big Tex when up in flames. Even before the big man’s charred body was lowered from Big Tex Circle, State Fair officials swore to rebuild the Texas giant. Today, the State Fair gave us a little more encouragement that Big Tex will once again be center stage at Fair Park this fall.

State Fair officials have received $45,000 in private donations for the rebuilding of Big Tex. And they stated that Big Tex will be ready for opening day, September 27, 2013.

The State Fair of Texas has a donation button on their website at www.bigtex.com. No donation is too small or too big. The suggested donation amounts are $25, $50, $100, $500, $1000 or any other sum.

The fire pretty much destroyed all of Big Tex from his hat to his boots. Looking back at the photos, I see that only his arms survived. Big Tex is being rebuilt from the ground up. He will be getting a new head and features, body structure, boots, clothes and hands. You can view a 3D rendering of a new hand on the State Fair’s YouTube channel at youtube.com/StateFairofTexas.

For some strange reason, State Fair officials are keeping the location of Big Tex a secret. They are only allowing designated reporters and photographers a chance to witness the rebuilding progress. Others, like myself, cannot get a foot in the door. This is a shame, since I have been photographing Big Tex for years and have created two time lapse videos (youtube.com/DallasArtNews) of him being lifted into place. Alas, what is a photographer to do?

The latest update from State Fair officials hints as an unveiling on opening day, September 27th. Big Tex is usually lifted into place the preceding Monday, which would be September 23rd. This makes me wonder if photographers will again be barred from capturing another historic moment. We’ll just have to wait and see.

I’m really looking forward to seeing Big Tex again at The State Fair of Texas, and I hope you are too. I’ll keep you posted if I get a chance to see him before the unveiling. Cheers.

It appears that someone has figured out how to make a large salary due to the fire. $600k to rebuild is rediculous.
Is the cost $200 for the replacement and the remainder in “management” fees?!
It would be nice to get these folks away from the issue, let’s think about the community and not how to make a quick buck off of people’s love of BigTex.
I would have suggested that the DCCCD be allowed to have students perform the project and not some greedy manager. That would be a proud item for Dallas to tout.
