Introducing The Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum: The Samurai Collection

This week Dallas got another star on its cultural map with the opening of The Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum: The Samurai Collection. The museum is one of the only museums dedicated to samurai art. The Samurai Collection is located near the Dallas Arts District at 2501 North Harwood St., Dallas, Texas. The Barbier-Mueller Museum is a collection of Japanese armor amasses by Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Muller and their children over the last twenty-five years.

The Samurai Collection includes suits of armor, helmets, masks, horse armor and various weapons. Artifacts from the collection span ten centuries. Selected works have been on display at the musée du quai Branly in Paris and at the Musée de la civilisation in Québec City. The next traveling exhibition will be at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in April.

The Samurai Collection is made up of several hundred objects, some of which have never been shown in public. The museum has created educational features to put the artifacts into context. Visitors will gain a fuller understanding of the Samurai culture.

Along with the opening, the museum has published a book for the collection, Art of Armor: Samurai Armor from the Ann and Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Collection. The introduction is by Morihiro Ogawa, special consultant for Japanese Arms and Armor at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The book presents a collection of essays and a color catalog of one hundred and twenty objects from the collection. The book is for sale at the museum.
