The New Mexico Museum of Art announced the opening of Shiprock and Mont St. Michel: Photographs by William Clift on April 19, 2013. This one-man exhibition features the works of master photographer William Clift, a Santa Fe resident. The exhibition runs through September 8, 2013.

Mr. Clift has spend almost four decades photographing two monolithic sites that dominate the landscape: Shiprock and Mont St. Michel. Shiprock is an eroded volcanic form that rises above the northwestern New Mexico desert. It is sacred to the Navajo. Mont St. Michel is a tidal island off the north coast of France. It has a picturesque Gothic church and monastery. The exhibition has more than seventy photographs displaying Clift’s nuanced exploration of the two locations.

William Clift

William Clift is recognized for his photographs of the New Mexico landscape. Clift began his photographic journey at age ten with an early interest with Polaroid cameras. In his teen, he studied with Paul Caponigro at a photography workshop. Clift moved to New Mexico in 1971, where he earned a reputation as a master photographer. He has twenty-four prints in the museum’s collection.
