President George W. Bush Painting Exhibition Hoax

Yeah, we could not believe the headline either. All we saw was George W. Bush and something about a painting exhibit in New York City. It has hoax or phishing scam written all over it. As much as we all want it to be real, don’t click that link.

It’s amazing how quickly our minds can make a simple headline into something real. Our first thought was an exhibit of paintings of the 43rd president while he was in office. After all, Erin Crowe has been painting former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Alan Greenspan for years. A collection of Bush paintings might be a nice thing to see. Alas, this is not the case.

We did a Google search for news on the subject. It appears a CNN iReporter made up the report and posted it last night. In this case, you get what you pay for. This report really lowers the credibility bar for iReporters everywhere.

The hoax scam was revealed by austinist. For more details and a statement from the hoaxer, click here. Really, it’s a safe link.

In addition to the CNN iReport, we also found a post on Salon.com. We’re not sure if they have figured out the story is a hoax yet. Click here to view the Salon.com post.

If by chance this isn’t a hoax and the former president is a closet artist, then we will definitely review an exhibit of his work. Cheers.
