The board of directors of the State Fair of Texas will honor the 2013 DISD scholarship recipients at a luncheon on April 29th in The Music Hall at Fair Park. This year’s keynote speaker will be David O. Brown, Chief of Police for the City of Dallas. Fox 4 anchor Clarice Tinsley will make the presentations of the Pete Schenkel Scholarship Awards.
The State Fair scholarship program was established in 1992 to benefit students who attend high schools in the Fair Park area. Each recipient will receive a total of $5,000 in scholarships, renewable in $1,250 annual increments to those who maintain a 3.0 GPA toward their college degree at a Texas university and/or community college.
A total of 43 seniors will receive the awards including: Ja’mes Atkins, Iman Belk, Amairani Gomez, Joana Jardon, Estefany Luna, Irma Puga Lule, Cassandra Rangel, Andrea Rivera and Christy Tovar, Irma L. Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School; Teaira Barber, Cathryn Gibbs, Mahogony Gillaspie, Darrien Pipkins, JaDria Robinson, Demosthenes Sherman and Oshea White, James Madison High School; Kristalyn Bradley, D’Andre Brothers, Aaron Brown, Ollie Goodman, Lakeshia Thompson, Richard Williams and De’Sharne Wooderts, Lincoln High School; Layth Kal, Karen Loya, Luis Najar, Anh Nguyen, Joanne Nguyen, Gabriel Ortuno, Clarisa Torres , Miguel Velasco, Emanuel Velazquez and Loui Zarate, North Dallas High School; and Janelle Ferrence, Kayla Finstein, Laura Garrison, Graeme Hamilton, Cal Little, Russell Regan, Drew Scherger, Erin Shilling, Breanna Simpson and Ilana Smirin, Woodrow Wilson High School.
For the 2013-2014 school year, the State Fair of Texas renewed $1,250 scholarships to 35 graduates of DISD schools who are making exceptional progress toward their college degree. The Fair also offers scholarship assistance to young people from around the state who participated in State Fair livestock shows. Since 1992, the State Fair of Texas has awarded new and renewed scholarships totaling more than $3 million through these two programs.
