Valery Guignon: The Jazz Series
Through September 30, 2013
Valery Guignon is the featured artist of a one-woman show entitled The Jazz Series hosted by the Marshall-McPhail Gallery in North Dallas from July 8 through September 30, 2013. The Opening Reception with the Dallas-based artist in attendance will be held Saturday, August 17, 2013 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend this free wine and cheese reception.
A lifetime lover of Jazz, Valery attends the Thursday Night Live Jazz in the Atrium at the Dallas Museum of Art. Not being one to just sit and listen when art is filling the room, she pulls out her sketch pad, oil pastels, and pencils and lets the music inspire her creations. What you see here is an original sketch.
Making stuff up comes naturally for Valery. Ever since childhood, where her mother asked her if she “ever left anything alone”, Valery has been creating and embellishing. Grandma’s button collection became parades across the living room floor, bed posts became dress manikins, drawers turned into doll bedrooms. Even the cat got dressed – although he became harder and harder to find on dress up day.
In high school, she took her creative gusto out on theater sets, modern dance, and sculptures in the woods. Her senior class voted her “Best Artist”. College took her to the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn N.Y. where she received a degree in Industrial Design in 1970. She moved to the woods and studied living on the land for 10 years. She’s worked in crochet, sewing, ceramics, gardening, canning, baking, spinning and dyeing.
Currently, Valery works in her studio in Dallas. Her main income comes from dyeing silks, designing wearable and wall art. Her wearable line sells in galleries throughout the country.
