Made in Oak Cliff
Gray Matters Gallery
Closing Reception September 14, 2013 from 6 to 9 p.m.
Gray Matters Gallery invites you to a closing reception for “Made in Oak Cliff”, an exhibition featuring members of the Oak Cliff Four, a group who were instrumental in bringing national arts attention to Dallas in the 1970’s.
Leigh Arnold, from “The Oak Cliff Artists: Outside the Influence”
“These guys had a kind of spunk and enthusiasm for making art and making things happen that was unprecedented in Dallas. Artists George Green, Jack Mims, Jim Roche, and Bob “Daddy-O” Wade created work that challenged viewers’ notions of Art, bringing together influences of pop, West Coast Funk, and Texas mythology. Their shared vocabulary and geographical proximity to one another earned Green, Mims, Roche, and Wade the nickname the Oak Cliff Four. With Henry Hopkins and Dave Hickey on their side, these go-getters put Oak Cliff on the national radar – having their work included in museum exhibitions at the DMA, the Tyler Museum of Art, and the Walker Art Center, and getting coverage in Art in America and Newsweek magazine. Fellow Oak Cliff neighbor, Mac Whitney, was an unofficial member of the group – set apart by his abstract, large-scale sculpture and aversion to group politics. The consummate lone wolf, Whitney has been able to maintain an autonomous career that got its start in a vacant lot in Oak Cliff. Altogether, these artists shared an interest in pulling back the curtain of the counterculture movement that was slowly creeping its way into Dallas. Of the many “moments” I had come across in Dallas’ history – theirs felt like a big one.”
The closing reception is September 14, 2013. The reception with the artists will be held on Saturday, September 14th, 6-9pm. Gray Matters Gallery is located at 113 N. Haskell Ave, North of Main, South of Elm.
