McKinney Avenue Contemporary Announces I AM A TEACHER

McKinney Avenue Contemporary
October 16-20, 2013

I AM A TEACHER tells the story of Ben James, who teaches history with a fierce passion and a great love for learning . IAAT covers 40 years in the life of an American teacher. The arc of the trilogy reflects four decades of American educational issues and by extension decades of cultural issues as well. The play is based on the teaching experience of its author, David Marquis. The play runs October  16-20, 2013 at the McKinney Avenue Contemporary (The MAC) Theater, located at 3120 McKinney Ave. in Dallas, Texas.

Part One toured from 1981 until 1989 then Part Two ran until 1997. Part Three was launched in the fall of 2012 with performances at Austin College, the Kessler Theater, Stage West, and, in February of 2013, The MAC.

I AM A TEACHER has toured 40 of the 50 states, with performances at the Kennedy Center, theaters, schools, colleges and universities, civic centers, corporate board rooms, and once even in a congressional hearing room. Corporate sponsors of Part One and Part Two included Bank of America, IBM, ARCO, Kodak, and The Dallas Morning News.

The production of the trilogy will be presented at The MAC October 16-20. Honorary Co-Chairs for the trilogy production are The Hon. Mike Rawlings, Mayor of Dallas, and Ambassador Ron Kirk, former Mayor of Dallas.

The project is produced by the Lyceum Corporation, a non-profit organization.

In addition to the play, I AM A TEACHER also became a book, which paid tribute to America’s teachers and was published by Simon and Schuster.  It was a Critic’s Choice in Time magazine and received a five page spread in Newsweek. The book became the basis for the, “Be a Teacher, Be a Hero,” ad campaign, which became the most successful public service campaign in the history of the Ad Council.

“I’m thrilled and delighted to have outstanding young actors Austin Tindle and Brian Witkowicz in Part One and Part Two. In addition to their acting abilities, Austin has worked with at-risk youth and Brian is a middle-school drama teacher, so they bring authenticity to this work,” said Marquis. “ I’m also extremely pleased to have John Davies and Ellen Locy, two gifted veterans of the Dallas stage scene, on board.
