Terrell James: Divided Sigh
Barry Whistler Gallery
Through April 26, 2014

Currently on view at Barry Whistler Gallery are paintings and works on paper by Terrell James. The works are based on a recent stay at Bald Head Island, North Carolina. James completed a residence in the defunct home of a lighthouse keeper which influenced the Divided Sight series. The exhibit is on view through April 26, 2014.

The freshly cracked shells of turtles and oysters nestled in the sand granted a physicality to James’ line work. The luminous shifts in her paintings’ backgrounds show forms in a way that is stubborn and actual, perhaps as unwitting captives of her sensitive lines.

James studied in Berlin, Washington, D.C., Houston and San Miguel de Allende. She has works in the permanent collection of the Dallas Museum of Art, MFA Houston, the Menil Collection, MFA Boston and the Whitney Museum of American Art, in addition to corporate and private collections. James words and resides in Houston, Texas.

This is the second show for James at the Barry Whistler Gallery, which first represented her in 2009.
