The Dallas Museum of Art acquired in May Frederiksborg Castle by Moonlight, 1817, by Danish artist Johan Christian Dahl. The recent acquisition is one of the most important works from the Copenhagen phase of Johan Christian Dahl’s career. Long missing, the work was rediscovered in 2000 after a cleaning revealed a signature and date of 1817, the year before Dahl left Copenhagen for Dresden. Dahl is best known today as a Romantic painter of Nordic landscapes, often seen in dramatic lighting or weather conditions. He is also considered one of the great masters of Danish Golden Age painting.
The historic Denton Square is about to become even more fun with the opening of a new Painting with a Twist on Thursday, June 12. Painting with a Twist is the original “Paint and Sip” franchise, where attendees are encouraged to bring snacks and drinks and have fun while a local artist guides everyone to their own paint works of art.
In February 2015, the Dallas Museum of Art will present the first major exhibition to explore the work of influential painters Kazuo Shiraga and Sadamasa Motonaga side-by-side. Shiraga/Motonaga: Between Action and the Unknown.
J. Elke Ertle was just 17 years old when she joined thousands of other West Berlin residents to hear President John F. Kennedy address the crowd on June 26, 1963. Ertle, who immigrated to the United States a few years later, will discuss that historic day and the Cold War of the early 1960s during The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza’s June Living History program. Ertle will present at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, June 6, and again at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 7, on the Museum’s seventh floor.

This summer, the Meadows Museum will present the first large-scale exhibition of drawings from the Kupferstichkabinett at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, one of the most significant collections of Spanish drawings in the world. The Spanish Gesture: Drawings from Murillo to Goya in the Hamburger Kunsthalle will open in Dallas on May 25, 2014, and will feature 86 works created by leading Spanish artists from the 16th to the 19th centuries, including Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Juan de Valdés Leal, Alonso Cano, and Francisco Goya.

NorthPark Center is pleased to present a FREE public art exhibition of Brooklyn-based Chilean artist Iván Navarro’s work, This Land Is Your Land. The installation, which was recently on view at Madison Square Park in New York City, features three elevated wooden water towers serving as metaphors for the experience of immigration. The works will be on view for one year at NorthPark Center on Level One between Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom near Gucci, Todd’s, Salvatore Ferragamo and Versace.

Contemporary and Modern works from the estate of Mary Jo Vaughn Rauscher and a collection assembled by the late Mr. & Mrs. I.C. Deal, Dallas, Texas were stand-outs.
