The Catholic Foundation is pleased to announce the Fifth Annual Catholic Foundation Plaza Artists Competition and invites all professional North Texas artists to submit their artwork for consideration. The deadline for entries is 3:00 p.m., Thursday, September 2, 2010.

The winning work will be selected by a panel comprised of highly respected members of the local arts community and will be announced and publicly unveiled in October. The winner will receive a $2,500 stipend and have their artwork displayed on a 28-foot-long by 9-foot-wide wall in The Catholic Foundation Plaza, located in the heart of the Dallas Arts District. Honorable mentions will receive $250 each.

“The Dallas Arts District has grown immensely in size and reach over the past year. We recognize the worth in The Catholic Foundation Plaza’s bold presence and ability to impact the Dallas arts community,” said Edwin M. Schaffler, President and CEO of The Catholic Foundation. “In this competition’s fifth year, we are more excited than ever to invite local members of the arts community to submit their work to be showcased on the Plaza Art Wall, which is such a wonderful, public showcase of our local talent.”

The Catholic Foundation Plaza is a 3,900-square-foot public space on the grounds of the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe, directly across from the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center. Dedicated in 2006, the Plaza was a gift from The Catholic Foundation to the Dallas community to commemorate the Foundation’s 50th anniversary. The Art Wall currently displays last year’s winning piece entitled “Music on Parade” by David Zvanut.

Professional artists living in the North Texas area are invited to submit one original work of art. The winning work will be photographed and installed on the wass and displayed there for one year. The work must be in keeping with the location of the Plaza on the Cathedral grounds but does not require a religious theme.

This year’s Selection Committee includes one representative from The Catholic Foundation and one representative from the Cathedral Shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe; Cindy M. Gummer, owner of The Enchanted Galleries; Katherine Wagner, CEO of the Business Council for the Arts; Patricia B. Meadows, Art Connections; David C. Hickman, sculptor; Pamela Nelson, Dallas artist; Gary Skotnicki of Architexas, the architectural firm and designer of the Plaza; and David Zvanut, the 2009 competition winner.

For the complete Request for Proposal with all competition details please contact Linda Scheets at 972.661.9792 or lscheets@catholicfoundation.com. For additional information please visit www.catholicfoundation.com.

Chartered in 1955 by a group of dedicated Catholic laymen, The Catholic Foundation is a donor-focused community foundation that guides benefactors in compassionate charitable giving endeavors, utilizing extensive expertise to carry out the various philanthropic goals of its donors. The Foundation’s planned giving programs connects donors directly with organizations they wish to support within the Diocese of Dallas and elsewhere, whether that is a home parish, Catholic school or a community-based charity. Thanks to the generosity of donors both past and present, The Foundation has provided approximately $24 million to local organizations through hundreds of grants over the past 54 years, and donor-advised funds maintained at the Foundation have accounted for even more grants amounting to millions of dollars.

Deadline for Submissions: Friday, July 9, 2010, 5:00 PM CDT

Starting Now! TEDxSMU is issuing a Request for Proposals for artists/artist teams interested in being a creative catalyst at TEDxSMU 2010. Open to artists, architects and designers of all types, we invite you to send us your ideas for a performance, installation or interactive-based project that will open our imaginations and create a dialogue between our two signature events: TEDxKids @SMU on Oct. 15, 2010 and TEDxSMU on Oct. 16, 2010.

Overview and Project Goals

TEDxSMU is currently planning its second series of ideas conferences around the theme “Starting Now.” The conferences incorporate dynamic and passionate presentations across a range of topics, this year centered on issues related to human survival. Creative performances, robust breaks and an energetic audience add to the mix that makes these events unique.

This year’s conferences will take place at Dallas’ new Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre – on the one year anniversary of its opening. TEDxKids @SMU is a half-day conference for 7th and 8th grade students (approximately 400 students + chaperones, speakers and sponsors), and TEDxSMU is a full day conference for attendees who have gone through an application process to be admitted.

One of the primary goals of the conference is to spark conversations about important ideas or issues. The organization’s steering committee firmly believes in the importance of creativity and creative expression as a driver for new ideas and innovation. As an extension of that belief, we have committed to commissioning a local North Texas artist or artist collaborative to create a piece to engage the audience at the Dallas TEDx events.

Artists are asked to propose projects that will be fully unveiled at the events on October 15-16, 2010; however, we will consider projects that have a visibility element leading up to the event and, if part of the selected project, will work with the artist to find an appropriate location. In keeping with the nature of this project, TEDxSMU encourages innovation and experimentation. Proposals are sought for three categories: interactive/community engagement, large scale temporary installation, and performance [artists can propose any combination of the three, however must only submit under one category].

Artists are particularly encouraged to consider projects that allow the audiences of the two separate events to “speak” to each other or somehow create dialogue between the two events.

Eligibility

Eligible artists must be 18 years or older and reside within the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Please Note: The selected artists/artist teams must be available to begin design work immediately (early August 2010) and complete the work for installation in mid-October. Artists/artist teams must also be available to manage installation on the artwork on October 14, 2010 and de-installation on October 16, 2010 following the conclusion of the TEDx conference.

Budget

The project limit for the winning proposal is $7,500. In addition there will be a $1,500 honorarium. Budgets should include design, fabrication, installation, structural drawings, engineering, insurance requirements, and documentation.

Bringing together ideas and interesting people from around the world and around the corner, TEDxSMU and TEDxKids @SMU are single-day conferences in Dallas, TX. Now in its second year, TEDxSMU is jointly produced by Southern Methodist University and the Idea Fund of the Communities Foundation of Texas. Both 2010 events – TEDxKids @SMU on October 15th and TEDxSMU on October 16th – will take place at the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre at the AT&T Performing Arts Center.

TEDxKids @SMU (the first TEDx event designed for students) hosts 350 7th-8th grade students for a free four hour conference, in exchange for completing four hours of community service. The 550 TEDxSMU attendees must apply and be selected in order to participate in the full-day conference. More information at www.TEDxSMU.org.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 25 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. The annual TED Conference invites the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes. Their talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Al Gore, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The annual TED Conference takes place in Long Beach, California, with simulcast in Palm Springs; TEDGlobal is held each year in Oxford, UK. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily, and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide.

TED has established the annual TEDPrize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world, and the TEDFellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

TEDGlobal 2010, “And Now the Good News,” will be held July 13-16, 2010, in Oxford, UK. TED2011, “The Rediscovery of Wonder,” will be held February 28 – March 4, 2011, in Long Beach, California, with the TEDActive simulcast in Palm Springs, California.

The Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University has selected two recipients of the inaugural 2009-2010 Meadows Prize, a new international arts residency: the Grammy-winning new music ensemble eighth blackbird and the New York-based artist collective Creative Time. The announcement was made Wednesday evening at the “Act 3, Scene I” gala at the AT&T Center for the Performing Arts by Dr. José Bowen, dean of the Meadows School.

“The opening of the AT&T Performing Arts Center is making a huge impact on the world’s perception of Dallas as a great city for the arts,” said Bowen. “To help make Dallas a great cultural capital, we must also become known as a center for the creation of new works, building a community that nurtures its own and tolerates artistic risk the same way we embrace entrepreneurial risk. To further that goal, in partnership with the Dallas arts community, the new Meadows Prize will bring artists with an international reputation to Dallas each year to produce an artistic legacy for the city.”

The prize includes housing for a one-to-three-month residency in Dallas, transportation expenses, studio/office space and project costs, in addition to a $25,000 stipend. In return, recipients are expected to interact in a substantive way with Meadows students and collaborating arts organizations, and to leave a lasting legacy in Dallas, such as a work of art that remains in the community, a composition or piece of dramatic writing that would be performed locally, or a new way of teaching in a particular discipline.

The Chicago-based, contemporary music sextet eighth blackbird is one of the most musically accomplished and innovative ensembles in the world. They are equally at home playing viola and flute, or kazoos and reverberating gongs, or opening a piano and playing on the strings and frame with toothpicks, credit cards and dish brushes. The group performs from memory and often incorporates theatrical elements into its shows. Eighth blackbird formed in 1996 when its members were students at Oberlin Conservatory of Music; since then, they have appeared in concert halls and festivals worldwide; released four acclaimed CDs, including the Grammy-winning strange imaginary animals in 2008 (Best Chamber Music Performance); received numerous grants and awards; and commissioned and premiered new works by eminent composers, including Steven Reich’s Double Sextet, which won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize. During their time in Dallas, eighth blackbird will introduce new music and provide workshops for chamber ensembles with the Meadows School and other local schools as well as the wider community. Their legacy for the city will be a curated music series in partnership with the Dallas Arts District. “The goal is not only to nurture Dallas-based new music and make Dallas a center for the musical cutting edge, but to generate new audiences for contemporary classical music in Dallas,” said Bowen.

Founded in New York in 1974, Creative Time has a history of commissioning, producing and presenting adventurous public artworks. During the 1980s and 90s it broadened the definitions of both art and public space, presenting projects on sites from billboards to landmark buildings to deli cups, and encouraging artists to address timely issues such as domestic violence, AIDS and racial inequality. Creative Time also promotes collaboration within the creative community, partnering with such organizations as Lincoln Center and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2007 Creative Time expanded to national and international projects, working with artists, sites and partners in cities such as New Orleans, Baltimore, Chicago and London. In 2008 Creative Time was hired by the city of Louisville to develop its first Public Art Master Plan. Through the Meadows Prize, Creative Time’s consultants will make several extended trips to Dallas over a year’s period to develop recommendations for growing and nurturing the Dallas arts community. The group intends to lead discussions, identify stakeholders, and help participants agree on goals and a plan of action. The aim is to bring together artists, collectors, gallery owners, arts organizations, urban planners, schools and city officials to lay the preliminary groundwork for a process that will lead to a master plan for the arts in the city.

The new Meadows Prize replaces the Meadows Award, which was given annually from 1981 to 2003 to honor the accomplishments of an artist at the pinnacle of a distinguished career. The Meadows Prize will be presented each fall to up to four artists. Recipients must be pioneering artists and scholars with an emerging international profile, active in a discipline represented by one of the academic units within the Meadows School: advertising, art, art history, arts administration, cinema-television, corporate communications, dance, journalism, music and theatre.

The 2009-10 winners were chosen by a nominating committee of 12 international arts professionals who originally submitted 38 names for consideration; the committee then held several rounds of voting to determine the prize recipients. The nominating committee included:

Dore Ashton, award-winning art critic, historian, professor and author/editor of 30 books on art and culture

Joanne Cassullo, New York-based philanthropist and arts supporter

James Houghton, the Richard Rodgers Director of the Drama Division at The Juilliard School and the Artistic Director of Signature Theatre in New York

artist/architect/filmmaker Alfredo Jaar

Golden Globe- and Emmy-winning actress Laura Linney

Marla Price, director of the Museum of Modern Art in Fort Worth

Deedie Potter Rose, chair of the Dallas Museum of Art board of directors

Severino Salvemini, professor of organization and human resources management at the SDA Bocconi School of Management in Italy

Paul Taylor, choreographer and founder of the Paul Taylor Dance Company

Jaap van Zweden, conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra

Stan Wojewodski, Jr., Distinguished Professor of Directing at the Meadows School

John Zorn, experimental New York composer, performer and producer

The Meadows Prize is sponsored by the Meadows School and The Meadows Foundation, in partnership with the new AT&T Center for the Performing Arts and local Dallas arts organizations.

2009 5th Annual 12Buy12 Juried Art Show
Presented by Austin Art Space Gallery & Studios
Juried by Mr. Bill Keese

What can you create in a 12” x 12” contained format? We have learned over the past four years: an astounding array of imaginative and original art. This show’s origins were at our previous location — ArtSpoken. Last year we moved into our new retail location and we are excited to announce our 5th Annual 12buy12 show at Austin Art Space.

We have changed the format and entry procedures slightly this year to make the show even more substantial and even more widely viewed. We have a single juror this year: Bill Keese. Mr. Keese is the President of Austin Visual Arts Association, an art scholar and a lifelong patron and promoter of the arts. For judging, artists must enter actual pieces of art (sized 12”x12” or less) rather than “representative” works that could be created in smaller formats later for the show itself. Therefore, the entry deadline has been extended in order to give artists more time to create their work. And, we’ve increased the number of entries to four per artist.

Some things have not changed. Austin Art Space still charges no commissions on sales at the show. The entry fee remains low. And, there is still a separate hanging fee for artwork juried into the show which helps fund the promotion of the show and opening reception which drew nearly 400 people last year. We also nationally promote the show and submit press on your behalf.

Join us for our biggest show of the year!

Entry Deadline: November 2, 2009

For complete details and entry form, go to www.austinartspace.com.

Exhibit Dates
Chosen art will be on display in Art Space Gallery from Dec. 1–21, 2009.

Opening Reception
Hosted by Austin Art Space Gallery December 5, 2009, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m.

From Press Release

Archstone, owners of The Èlan at Bluffview Dallas luxury apartments, announced Alison Jardine of Dallas as the winner of the first-annual Èlan Art Contest for her work titled “Trees Squared.”

The announcement was made July 31 at the First Annual Art of Èlan Gala, held in celebration of the gallery’s opening at The Èlan at Bluffview, 3850 W. Northwest Highway. The judging committee, composed of local Dallas art and business community members, selected Jardine’s art piece as one of the top three finalists out of dozens of entries. A panel of Archstone representatives then reviewed the finalists and chose Jardine’s work as the winner based on visual interest, content and artistic craftsmanship.

Jardine received six months of free rent in The Art of Èlan gallery to display her work, as well as a $1,000 gift card. Jardine, who moved to Dallas in 2003 from England, studied various art disciplines in college in the U.K. Now calling North Texas home, she continues to study art through courses at Southern Methodist University and has established herself as a full-time, professional artist. She said her art is inspired by nature, and she is committed to running a green studio and maintaining a sustainable lifestyle. She and her family were almost overwhelmed with excitement when Archstone representatives presented her with her prize.

“I plan to use the space as my working art studio,” said Jardine. “I am going to have to start painting a sign for the outside!”

More than 100 people browsed the gallery at the gala event and four artists, including the winner, sold art pieces. Representatives of Archstone and The Èlan at Bluffview said the goals of the art contest and gala were to help rejuvenate the Shops at Bluffview retail space, and to support, inspire and showcase the work of talented Dallas artists.

“Archstone is committed to serving the communities where it offers luxury apartment homes,” said Melanie Flaherty, Archstone’s director of marketing for the West region. “We are very pleased with the outcome of the event, and we would like to thank each of the remarkably talented artists who participated.”

Jardine’s work will be on display at The Art of Èlan gallery from now through February. Her art collections can be viewed online at www.alisonjardine.com. For more information, visit www.theelanatbluffview.com/artofelan.
