After an 18-month State of Texas application process spearheaded by the City of El Paso Museums and Cultural Affairs Department (MCAD), El Paso finally has an official Downtown Arts District. Encompassing 18 existing cultural assets, historic renovations and tourist amenities, the Downtown Arts District will be officially designated at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 14, 2011 by the Director and Deputy Director of the Texas Commission on the Arts.

The competitive funding program provides support for recurring arts and sporting events in downtown El Paso, with a focus on promoting tourism. Walk into the east gallery at the Latino Cultural Center – into the Rene Alvarado show – and it seems immediately obvious Alvarado is a portrait painter. Spend some time really looking at these paintings, though, and you see that the magic of Rene Alvarado’s art is that he is a consummate visual storyteller, decorative artist, and beautifully technical painter as well.
