There will be an opening reception on Friday, March 25 with a Gallery Talk at 6:30 p.m. followed by a reception from 7 – 8:30 p.m. Wine and hors d’oeuvres are provided by the AMoA Alliance, the Museum’s supporting organization.

For over 38 years the Amarillo College and the West Texas A&M University Visual Arts Departments have enjoyed this partnership with AMoA that showcases the best of current works of students and faculty. Students learn to prepare work for exhibition and gain a sense of pride in sharing their work with the community in the professional setting of the museum.

AMoA offers free student membership (with showing of I.D.) to all AC and West Texas A&M University students. AMoA also includes students in special events, such as the Ladd Lecture series. Art Professors of both institutions take classes to the museum to view and discuss current exhibitions. Vicky Taylor-Gore, AC Art Professor, stated, “Seeing art work in person is a much more enriching experience for students then simply seeing it reproduced in a textbook.”

Museum hours are Tuesday – Friday from 10 – 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 – 5 p.m. AMoA is located on the Amarillo College Washington Street campus at 2200 South Van Buren with entrance through the Fine Arts Plaza.

What does the Amarillo Museum of Art (AMoA) have in common with The Louvre in Paris and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.? Paint-by-Numbers art!

Palo Duro Canyou

What does the Amarillo Museum of Art (AMoA) have in common with The Louvre in Paris and the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.? Paint-by-Numbers art!

But in typical Texas style, Amarillo will do it BIGGER!

“Ours will be the world’s largest indoor paint-by-numbers art project. Residents of every age in the Texas Panhandle are invited to join the fun,” said Lilia Escajeda, president of AMoA Alliance, volunteer group sponsoring the 2 month long event on the museum’s 1st floor.

Thursday, December 9, 2010, at 1 p.m., Amarillo College Fuse Arts club will kick off the event by sketching & numbering an original of West Texas icon Palo Duro Canyon–the world’s only paint-by-numbers art of the canyon–based on a photo by Amarillo’s Jim Jordan.

Dr. Graziella Marchicelli, AMoA Executive Director, notes “This is the first time a Texas art museum has staged such an event, and at 10 feet wide, this Paint-by-Numbers community event will be a great new component of our annual Panhandle Artists’ Hanging. Dates for the 2011 Hanging are January 7 – 16 with the Opening Party on Thursday, January 6.” Kevin Ball, president of the AMoA board of trustees agrees. “We want people to know that art museums are for everyone, and that ours is both fun and educational.”

Beginning Thursday, January 6 and continuing for the next two months, area residents of all ages—no art talent required—are invited to visit the Amarillo Museum of Art on the Washington Street campus of Amarillo College, 2200 South Van Buren St., to participate during museum hours, T-F from 10-5 p.m., S-S 1-5 p.m.

“AMoA Alliance will supply brushes and paint. Each numbered section is a $5 donation to the AMoA Alliance. All proceeds will go to the Alliance Education Fund, which last year supported the museum’s education programs serving nearly 5,000 students throughout the Panhandle area,” said Anne Amerson, event chairman. “Participants will have their name added to the artists roster. Everything for the event has been donated by a local business.”

AC Fuse Arts students who will begin the world’s largest indoor paint-by-numbers project in the museum include: Alejandra Amaya, (Fuse Arts president/AMoA Education Apprentice), Jordan Jones, Morgan Kuster, Carlos Najera, and Noelly Perez .

Answer the call of your inner artist. Be part of the “Paint-by-Numbers” project! January 6 through April 2011.

Rock On! The Art of the Music Posters from the 60s and 70s
Amarillo Museum of Art
June 18 through September 5, 2010

Rock On! The Art of the Music Posters from the 60s and 70s, the summer exhibition at the Amarillo Museum of Art, will set the theme for the opening night fundraising gala on Friday, June 18, 2010. Party goers will enjoy a private viewing of original posters of the period; the opportunity to purchase authentic rock and roll memorabilia (such as a one-of-a kind handcrafted bracelet made from guitar strings played by Peter Frampton); and eat, drink and be merry with MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC. Lovers of the Grateful Dead, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, the Clash, the Who, Pink Floyd, the Talking Heads, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and their contemporaries will dance the night away while helping support AMoA’s school outreach program that serves Amarillo and the Texas Panhandle. For reservations and ticket pricing, please email amoa@actx.edu, call 806-371-5050, or visit AMoA’s website at www.amarilloart.org.

The exhibition will be open to the public from June 19 until September 5. More than 75 vintage offset lithographs will be on display. From late 1960s psychedelia through the emergence of punk in the late 1970s, Rock On! highlights the work of leading graphic artists who fused their visual talents with the musical vision of the era’s influential bands to create some of the most enduring pop culture images of the 20th century.

Many of these posters came out of the San Francisco Bay Area, home to a crop of young visual artists and two now-legendary rock clubs during the 1960s—Fillmore West and the Avalon Ballroom. Numbered among the artists were Stanley Mouse and the late Alton Kelley, the San Francisco-based team who created the Grateful Dead’s famous skull-and-rose emblem; Milton Glaser, photographers Brian Duffy and the late Richard Avedon, Gerald Scarfe, Victor Moscoso, and John Pasche.

Their colorful and highly creative promotional posters represent a unique intersection of fine art, music, and commerce. They reflect the “hippie” ethos and anti-war, anti-establishment attitudes that were prevalent in San Francisco and across the U.S. in the late 1960s and into the 1970s.

During the exhibition AMoA will host author Paul D. Grushkin, who will speak about his book The Art of Rock – Posters from Presley to Punk, and artist Victor Moscosco, whose Swirl Dance poster for Quicksilver Messenger Service and Steve Miller Blues Band at Avalon Ballroom will be on exhibition.

The Amarillo Museum of Art is located at 220 South Van Buren on the Washington Street campus of Amarillo College. Hours are Tuesday- Friday from 10 – 5 and Saturday and Sunday from 1-5. Every day is free admissions day at AMoA. For more information, please call 371-5050 or check our website at www.amarilloart.org.
