Survey of the MFAH’s Metal Collection Opens March 2010
Beginning March 7, 2010, 30 contemporary metal works will be on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in Liquid Lines: Exploring the Language of Contemporary Metal. Organized by Cindi Strauss, MFAH curator of modern and contemporary decorative arts and design, the exhibition explores the varied ways that contemporary artists have manipulated metal to highlight the fluid properties of the material. Works on view range from furniture and vases to avant-garde jewelry and sculptural installations, all from the museum’s permanent collection.

Dallas Art News invited webcomic artists from the Dallas Webcomics Expo (DWEX) to participate in a special feature, Webcomics Imitating Art. The idea was for each webcomic artist to use their characters and style to recreate a famous work of art. We only expected to get about six works, but we lucked out and got nineteen webcomic artists to participate.
Web Comic Artists Wanted for Feature Article
Calling all Web Comic artists! Dallas Art News would like to highlight established Web Comics in a future article. The theme of the article will be “comics imitating art”, where artists re-create well known works of art using their Web Comic character(s) and style. The article, which will mostly be the images created by the comic artists and links to their sites, will appear during the first week of December 2009.

Recent Work by Jennifer Pastor at Museum of Fine Art, Houston
The Glassell School of Art’s Core Exhibition Program presents the most recent body of work by Los Angeles-based artist Jennifer Pastor. Opening on December 11 with a lecture and reception, the exhibition Dead Landscape is an installation of some 40 drawings and photographs that juxtaposes archival materials from wars involving the U.S. with Pastor’s drawings and photographs of culturally sanctioned, organized fights (from cage fighting and gladiator events to the Ultimate Fighting Heavy Weight Championship). Exhibited at Greengrassi in London earlier this year, the Houston showing will be the first presentation of Dead Landscape in the United States. An additional element to the exhibition—a large-scale sculpture titled Endless Arena and inspired by the same line of inquiry as the Dead Landscape installation—will be shown later this year across the street from the Glassell School, in the MFAH’s Caroline Wiess Law Building.
Your Bright Future: 12 Contemporary Artists from Korea at the Museum of Fine Art, Houston
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH), presents the critically-acclaimed exhibition Your Bright Future: 12 Contemporary Artists from Korea, the first major museum exhibition in the continental United States in almost two decades to focus on contemporary art from South Korea. The exhibition is co-organized by the MFAH and LACMA, and was on view in Los Angeles until September 20, 2009. Houston is the second and final venue on the tour. Your Bright Future (a deliberately ambiguous title taken from a sculpture by Bahc Yiso) represents each of the twelve Korean artists in the show through a large-scale installation or substantial body of work, including site-specific installations, video art, computer animation, and sculpture. The exhibition is on view at the MFAH November 22, 2009 through February 14, 2010.

Contemporary Korean Photography at Museum of Fine Art, Houston
This October, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH), presents Chaotic Harmony: Contemporary Korean Photography, the most comprehensive exhibition of contemporary Korean photography to ever be shown in the United States. Organized by Anne Wilkes Tucker, The Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator of Photography at the MFAH, and Karen Sinsheimer, Curator of Photography at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Chaotic Harmony features large scale photographs by 40 Korean artists, many of who have never before exhibited in international museum exhibitions and whose work will be on view in the United States for the first time in this show. At the MFAH, the works will be on display in the Audrey Jones Beck Building’s Cameron Foundation Gallery, as well as the Lower Beck Corridor, from October 18, 2009 through January 3, 2010, presenting a fascinating window onto the vital and constantly evolving country, Korea.
The Eagle has Landed at the Museum of Fine Art, Houston
To mark the 40th anniversary of man’s landing on the moon, this September the MFAH presents The Moon: “Houston, Tranquility Base Here. The Eagle has Landed,” an exhibition that chronicles man’s enduring fascination over five centuries with our nearest planetary neighbor. Ranging from moonlit landscapes by the Old Masters and the Impressionists, to Ansel Adams’ iconic Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico (1941) and shots famously taken on the moon by the members of Apollo 11, the exhibition provides a dazzling overview of five centuries of moon-gazing. In addition, early scientific instruments, books, moon globes, maps, Galileo Galilei’s 1610 treatise on the moon, and objects from NASA will be on view. The Moon will be presented September 27, 2009-January 10, 2010 in the Audrey Jones Beck Building. The exhibition was conceived by Dr. Andreas Blühm, director of the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne, and is presented in Houston in an expanded version under the direction of the MFAH’s associate curator of European art, Helga Aurisch.
MFAH Showcases Painter Joaquín Torres-García from Houston Collections
Opening September 6 and on view through November 29, 2009, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, will showcase a selection of key paintings by Joaquín Torres-García, one of the most influential Latin American artists and theorists of the first half of the 20th century. Organized by Mari Carmen Ramírez, the Wortham Foundation curator of Latin American art at the MFAH, Joaquín Torres-García: Paintings in Houston Collections features a dozen paintings all culled from major Houston collections. The exhibition complements Joaquín Torres-García: Constructing Abstraction with Wood, an exhibition of over 80 wooden constructions also curated by Ramírez, which will open on September 25 at the Menil Collection and is an MFAH/Menil collaboration. These two exhibitions will be the first to present Torres-García’s work in the United States in over forty years. As such, they provide a unique opportunity to acquaint Houston audiences with the work of this major exponent of the international avant-garde. To celebrate this special moment there will be a series of joint events and programs organized around both exhibitions.
MFAH Exhibits Recent Accessions in Design
The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s curator of modern and contemporary decorative arts and design, Cindi Strauss, has hand-picked a selection of the most significant decorative art objects to have entered the collection in the past five years for Recent Accessions in Design. Showcasing work by some of the most renowned designers of the 20th and 21st centuries, the exhibition introduces visitors to about 40 of the most recent design objects acquired by the museum. Exhibiting a range of scale, material, and function, all the works demonstrate aesthetic significance and technical innovation. The exhibition is on view in the Caroline Wiess Law Building from August 16, 2009 through February 21, 2010. Nearly 20 contemporary sculptural and turned wood objects given to the MFAH by John and Robyn Horn will also be on view at the gallery’s entrance.
