The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s acclaimed Core program awards residencies to emerging visual artists and art scholars. Overseen by the Core Program’s associate director, Mary Leclère, the Core fellows present an exhibition each spring that showcases work made during that year’s residency. This year’s edition opens Friday, March 16, 2012, with works on view in the Laura Lee Blanton Gallery at the Glassell School of Art through April 20, 2012.

The first-ever monographic exhibition of Dutch still-life painter Willem van Aelst (1627-1683) premieres at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH), March 11–May 28, 2012. Design Fair 2012 features vintage modern objects of the 20th century, as well examples of cutting-edge contemporary design. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH), will be supporting the Doodle 4 Google™ 2012 contest by encouraging students in the community to participate and exhibiting the state finalists’ doodles in an exhibition this summer. The annual Doodle 4 Google competition invites students across the United States to submit their own Google doodle—the selected best of which will be displayed on www.google.com. The Google doodle is a custom version of the Google logo displayed on the Google homepage throughout the year in celebration of holidays, anniversaries and the lives of notable artists and scientists.

The Menil Collection announced that March 4, 2012 will be the final day to see the Byzantine frescoes currently housed on its campus in the Byzantine Fresco Chapel, after which time they will be returned to the Orthodox Church of Cyprus. In celebration of the frescoes, their time in Houston, and the purpose-built Chapel that has been their home for fifteen years; the Menil will present special public events commemorating the return of this sacred art.

The new, permanent Arts of Japan Gallery at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, will open to the public on Sunday, February 19. The Japan gallery will be the final installation in a suite of permanent Arts of Asia galleries surrounding Cullinan Hall in the Caroline Wiess Law Building, culminating an effort begun in 2007 to expand the presentation of Asian art at the museum.

Organized by the Menil Collection, Richard Serra Drawing: A Retrospective is the first-ever critical overview of the artist’s drawings, as well as the first major one-person exhibition organized under the auspices of the Menil Drawing Institute and Study Center. The exhibition − which opened at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, traveled to San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), and now concludes at the Menil Collection − traces the crucial role that drawing has played in Richard Serra’s work for more than 40 years.
