The San Antonio Museum of Art is pleased to announce the forthcoming exhibition 5,000 Years of Chinese Jade Featuring Selections from the National Museum of History, Taiwan and the Arthur M. Sackler Collection, Smithsonian Institution. This major international exhibition organized by SAMA opens in the Museum’s Cowden Gallery on October 1, 2011. The exhibition is held in conjunction with the City of San Antonio’s yearlong celebration of Taiwan.

The National Endowment for the Arts in collaboration with Blue Star Families’ Operation Appreciation will honor millions of American service members with free admission to museum across the country. Starting Friday, May 27, 2011, over 125 museums in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas will open their doors to active military personnel and their families. The Blue Star Museums program ends Sunday, September 4, 2011.

The San Antonio Museum of Art announced today that Dr. Katherine Luber has been appointed Kelso Director of the Museum effective July 2011. The announcement is the culmination of a national search to replace former director Dr. Marion Oettinger, Jr., who stepped down to devote himself to serving as full-time curator of the Museum’s Latin American art collection.

Most, if not all, museums and galleries will be closed in observance of Thanksgiving, a very American holiday. We at Dallas Art News feel this to be one of the biggest misfortunes in society today. Just think of the miles and miles of art space available in Texas for walking off those extra helpings of turkey and stuffing. A couple of weeks ago our managing editor, Michael Roman, took a screen printing workshop at We Are 1976 (read Screen Printing Workshop with Mike Arreaga and Brian McCorquodale at We Are 1976). Michael finally gathered together the few supplies needed to make his first screen print for Dallas Art News. The design is based on Andy Warhol’s famous Campbell’s Soup prints.

Through the Blue Star Museums partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, forty-two museums in Texas are offering free admission to military personnel and their immediate family. Free admission starts this Memorial Day, May 31, 2010, through Labor Day, September 6, 2010.
