Take a stroll down “Memory Lane” during a free guided tour of the Tyler Museum of Art exhibition Remember When: Marvels and Memories from the Collection of Dr. James Clark. Dr. Clark will lead visitors through the exhibition offering insight into his personal collection of vintage movie posters, collectibles and historical items. Admission to the exhibition is free, and the tour begins at 11:00 a.m. in the Museum’s North Gallery.
Enjoy a delightful collision of film, history and pop culture during the final installment of the Tyler Museum of Art’s Spring Lecture Series featuring special guest speaker Stewart Smith, Arts and Entertainment Editor for the Tyler Morning Telegraph, on Tuesday, May 24. “Let’s Go to the Movies: The Art of Film and Progression of Pop Culture” will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Jean Browne Theatre located on the Tyler Junior College Campus. The lecture is free for TMA Members, $7 for adults, and $5 for students and seniors.
Dance, theatrical performance and free art activities are among the exciting items on the agenda for the Tyler Museum of Art’s Family Day this Saturday, May 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. The special event combines a selection of performances showcasing multiple artistic disciplines and the talents of local performers in addition to the TMA’s usual second Saturday program of art activities. The event is free, and so is admission to current exhibitions, A Legacy of Love and Freedom: Quilt Paintings by Sedrick Huckaby, and also Remember When: Marvels and Memories from the Collection of Dr. James Clark.
Heroes and villains from the silver screen collide with some of history’s most colorful characters in Remember When: Marvels and Memories from the Collection of Dr. James Clark. The exhibition will be on view at the Tyler Museum of Art from May 8 – August 14, 2011 and is the sixth exhibition in the “Tyler Collects” series, organized by the Museum to showcase private collections belonging to residents of Tyler. The exhibition comprises over 300 objects ranging from vintage movie posters to historic memorabilia collected by Dr. Clark, who is a reconstructive plastic surgeon in Tyler. This exhibition was organized by the Tyler Museum of Art, and admission is free.
Members of the Tyler Museum of Art’s new museum project team of architects continue to make both national and international headlines. Earlier this month, the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky opened an exhibition titled Unveiling the New Speed: A Model of the Future designed to showcase its $79 million expansion led by TMA project architects, wHY Architecture. Doug Reed of Reed Hilderbrand Landscape Architects was awarded the esteemed Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome. Reed Hilderbrand was chosen by the TMA to design plans for the new museum project in 2008.
The Tyler Museum of Art is proud to present a selection of oil paintings by the acclaimed Sedrick Huckaby, a contemporary Texas artist who uses thick, impasto paint to create shape-shifting quilt murals, evocative of tradition, family, and faith. The exhibition, A Legacy of Love and Freedom: Quilt Paintings by Sedrick Huckaby, includes a selection of the artist’s most recent works, on view April 17 through July 3, 2011 in the Museum’s Bell Gallery. Simply stated, Huckaby paints his grandmother’s handmade quilts, but upon the large canvases, the folding images are a soothing complexity of form and meaning.
Children will love the opportunity to become master sculptors this weekend at the Tyler Museum of Art. Families are invited to participate in the Museum’s free Family Day, which lasts from 2 to 4 p.m. in the classroom on Saturday, April 9. This month’s activities are designed to reflect techniques used by artists in the exhibition The Cornish Art Colony: Giants of America’s Gilded Age with a focus on works of sculpture. Family Days are always free and offered on the second Saturday of the month.
Join the Tyler Museum of Art in celebrating the creative abilities of over 70 students from 9 local schools during the Tyler Museum of Art’s 7th Annual High School Art Exhibition, March 6-27, 2011. The event coincides with Youth Art Month and offers local high school students the opportunity to have their original works of art shown in a true museum exhibition. The public is invited to join student artists and their friends and families for a free reception and awards ceremony at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 20. Light refreshments will be served in the Museum lobby, and special art activities will be provided in the TMA Classroom. The exhibition is sponsored by Kay Arms.
Artworks created to dazzle the eyes of Chinese emperors will be the focus of the second Spring Lecture presented by the Tyler Museum of Art. The lecture, titled “The Art of the Dragon Throne: Paintings, Ceramics, and Decorative Furnishings Made for the Emperors of China” will be given by Elizabeth Hammer, Vice President and Specialist in Chinese Paintings for Christie’s, New York, on Thursday, February 24 at 5:30 p.m. in the TMA classroom. Spectacular large-scale murals by Maxfield Parrish from the Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney Collection, a nearly seven-foot tall, golden Diana of the Tower, and ruggedly dynamic horse and rider sculptures by Frederic Remington combine with other works in the Tyler Museum of Art exhibition titled The Cornish Art Colony: Giants of America’s Gilded Age to create a visually stunning experience for visitors now through April 17, 2011.
Visitors will enjoy a free, guided First Friday Art Tour of the Tyler Museum of Art’s exhibition titled “Studiously Slangy and Bohemian” The Tile Club–Artists of America’s Aesthetic Movement from the Graham Williford Collection beginning at 11 a.m. at the Museum on Friday, January 7. The tour, guided by a member of the TMA education staff, will last under an hour and will feature selected works from the Tile Club exhibition. First Friday Art Tours are offered free of charge every first Friday of the month, and there is no admission fee for this exhibition.
